Child Find is a program mandated by the Commonwealth of Virginia which serves children from birth to age 22 and their families. School districts are directed to screen, identify, and evaluate those students who might need special education services to support their learning. For children aged 0-3, parents are directed to Infant and Toddler Connection of Fairfax-Falls Church, www.infantva.org, 703-246-7121. School-aged children contact their designated school: K-2nd Mt. Daniel Elementary, 3rd-5th Thomas Jefferson, 6th-8th Mary Ellen Henderson, and 9th-12th George Mason High School.
For information about typical preschool development, please visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website.
A developmental intake can be provided free of charge by Preschool Child Find if parents have concerns about a child's development in speech and language, fine motor, gross motor, cognitive, social-emotional, or self-help skills, ages 2 to 5. Children must be two years old by September 30th of the current school year.
Those children identified as eligible may receive special education services through Falls Church City Public Schools. Child Find is an opportunity for children with special needs to receive early intervention services. The intake is used to determine if further intervention or assessment for special education may be appropriate. If the results of testing suggest that services are needed, we will make a referral to special education and a request for parental permission for evaluation.
