Friday Update

Dear FCCPS Families and Staff,

The end of the year is drawing near...this is the last Friday for our students. We are almost to the finish line, and I am so thankful to you - Students, Families, Faculty, and Staff - for making it happen for our students this spring. During unusual circumstances came unusual excitement and creativity. In the coming days, we will see great things happening for our 2020 graduates, and that alone will be something to behold. Thank you again for all you have done to support us.

When we began the process of developing our “Reopening of Schools Plan” for the Fall of 2020, we quickly realized that a major component of the plan needed to include a successful relaunch of our online distance learning program if the circumstances dictate. We experienced great success with our spring 2020 continuity of learning program. We also recognize it is critically important to enhance and refine online learning for students and staff if we are unable to open up schools in a full-time, face-to-face manner in the fall. We remain hopeful that we will open our schools face-to-face on August 24th. Still, due to the uncertain reality and negative impact COVID 19 continues to have on normal school operations, we must consider online learning in our overall plan.

With that, we are respectfully requesting information and reflection from you. We want to know what you feel worked well, what posed a challenge, and what needs to be improved. You are key stakeholders and will help guide our instructional planning and next steps for the coming year.

To this end, we have developed a survey to gather your thoughts and feelings about our e-learning program. We would really appreciate it if all students, FCCPS staff, and parents would take a few minutes to complete it. The survey is anonymous, and the results will be used to help shape our work as we continue planning for the upcoming school year. We are also asking parents of our younger students (elementary age) to support them as appropriate to navigate the survey and to ensure understanding of all of the questions.

This survey will likely be the first of two that will come out in the next several weeks. The second will be predicated on additional inputs from the Governor’s Office, the Virginia Department of Education, the Fairfax County Health District, and our regional partners.

Of note, we are continuing to coordinate with our regional partner school divisions because one of the greatest risks we have to a smooth opening is the stability of our workforce. As many of you are aware, a significant number of our faculty and staff (that also have school-age children) do not live in the Falls Church City. If, for example, we were to return to school, and Arlington and Alexandria did not...an FCCPS teacher (parent in another system) could make a decision to stay home with their child and not return to work, which is allowable for reduced pay under the CARES Act. So, coordination at this juncture is essential.

Here are your updates for the week - have a great weekend!

Peter

Updates

Face Coverings

If you need to come to the schools for anything please bring and wear a face covering. Thank you for your cooperation.

Reopening TJ Field

This weekend we will reopen the TJES field. As we do this, please remind your family and friends that appropriate social distancing and face coverings are recommended to ensure there is limited ability for transmission of COVID 19. As conditions improve, we will consider opening the track at GMHS for public use, but it will remain closed right now. Additionally, the stadium field remains closed. I mention this because, on multiple occasions, I have seen people on the turf playing soccer. Thanks!

Report Cards

All FCCPS students will be issued a report card this year. They will be mailed to families on Friday, June 12th.

8th Grade Moving Up Ceremony

To honor our 8th graders (class of 2024), Henderson will hold a virtual Moving up Ceremony on Wednesday, June 3rd, at 7 pm. On the evening of the 3rd, Principal Hardy will send out a link to the virtual ceremony for the entire Henderson community. This will allow students and parents to view the event in unison. The link will also be shared the following day in the Morning Announcements and posted to Schoology. Our goal is to provide a way for students and parents to celebrate this milestone and for our staff to honor our 8th-grade students and their time with us as Huskies!

Henderson Virtual Awards Ceremony

We have a lot to celebrate this year! Our students have accomplished so much, and we will honor them in a virtual awards ceremony, which will be held on Thursday, June 4th at 9:00 am. A link will be shared with our Henderson community and posted to Schoology so that students and parents can participate. Actual awards will be mailed home in student’s end-of-year packets.

School Yearbooks

Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, our yearbooks for both Henderson and Mason will be delayed. Principal Hardy and Principal Hills will communicate the revised plan for distribution, respectively. Mason Senior Yearbooks will be mailed home. The anticipated delivery date is June 30th. Mr. Hills will send a community update when underclassmen yearbooks are available for distribution. Thank you for your understanding. (Please see Josten’s here letter)

Yearbooks at Mount Daniel and Thomas Jefferson also have been delayed by the publisher. Yearbooks of TJ students returning to FCCPS will be distributed to students when they return to school. TJ students who ordered yearbooks and are leaving FCCPS will have their yearbook mailed to them. Mount Daniel yearbooks will be passed out when students return in the Fall.

Celebrating our Graduates

Mark your calendar - “Class of 2020 Graduation” - Wednesday night, June 10th at 7 p.m.

Graduation is just a week and a half away! The video will be aired on FCCTV and streamed on YouTube simultaneously. More details in next week’s update. I have been involved in the production, and I can tell you it is not to be missed. Get your “Watch Party” plans together!

I think it would be great to have everyone in the City of Falls Church put up a sign in your window, make a yard sign, or find some creative way to congratulate the Class of 2020. When you put up your celebratory piece, please tweet it to @peternoonan with the #fccps2020grads, and I will retweet them and put them out into the “Twitterverse” for all to see. Have fun with this, and the more creative the better!

Reminders

Mental Health Supports

This has been a time of high anxiety and stress for us all. We need to take the same care with our mental health as we do with our physical health. Focusing on emotional needs is essential. It is ok to step back and take a break. We are in the midst of a traumatic event. Caring for yourself and your students is critical. Please visit our FCCPS Mental Health Page for community resources, stress reduction/self-care activities, and other information related to this topic. Check on each other, reach out, and remember you are not alone. We are also working on a plan to provide division-wide mental health supports during the summer.

Food/Nutrition Support

FCCPS continues to provide weekly meal support each Friday. Any family in need can order 7-days worth of breakfasts and lunches for each child in their family. The boxes of food are distributed at Thomas Jefferson Elementary and George Mason High School. Please visit our FCCPS Nutritional/Support Webpage for information on how to sign up for this wonderful resource. Please reach out to Richard Kane (rkane@fccps.org) for more information or with questions.

Celebrando a nuestros Graduados
