Child Find Services

Child Find is a critical component of the special education process aimed at identifying and supporting children with disabilities from a young age. It is a federal mandate in the United States under the Virginia Regulations Governing Special Education Services and the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) that require school divisions to actively search for and evaluate children who may have disabilities and be in need of special education and related services. Child Find ensures that children, from infancy thru age 21, are screened, evaluated, and provided with appropriate educational and support services if they qualify for special education. The ultimate goal of Child Find is to intervene early, offering children with disabilities the best possible chance to reach their full potential by addressing their unique learning needs and fostering inclusive and equitable educational opportunities for all students who reside in Falls Church City. By identifying and supporting these children early on, the Child Find program plays a crucial role in ensuring that no child is left behind in their educational journey.

SPECIAL NOTES: Falls Church City Public Schools obligations for Child Find include all children, including those who live in insecure housing or are homeless; in Foster Care; or who are incarcerated. Children suspected of having a disability may also be considered for adaptations and accommodations under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
