FCCPS The Road to Reopening

Happy Friday, everyone. I hope you have big plans for this weekend. This is the fourth installment of The Road to Reopening, and you can continue to expect it every Friday as we approach the start of school.

Over the past week, we have seen some shifting in other school divisions in our region here in Northern Virginia. Please know we are watching this very carefully. FCCPS continues to plan for multiple scenarios. We are listening to you, our employees, and monitoring health data. At this time, we are still planning to open in a hybrid (alternating day) scenario with students coming to school two days a week, either Tuesday/Thursday or Wednesday/Friday for our K-12 students. General information regarding our preschool plan has already been sent to parents. Monday remains a teacher planning day with intervention in the hybrid plan. The other option for families is an online/virtual-only option.

Our teams are pulling together important information to share with you soon concerning our online/virtual program options, and deciding the days of the week students will be assigned. We, also, will be sharing a registration form allowing you to formally select your student’s instructional option be it the hybrid option or online/virtual only.

The student assignments for Tuesday/Thursday and Wednesday/Friday will be decided using the first letter of the student's last name. But we will remain flexible for families needing to request to move to the other days due to child care or other reasons. The registration form that parents receive will allow you to indicate a request to swap to the other in-person days. We will work to accommodate as many of these requests as possible as we understand the importance of allowing these changes.

Our goal is to provide families with the information needed to make an informed choice, and an additional registration form is to allow parents to make a final decision based on the options and their current needs.

An Important Note: Opening a school division is a multivariable problem that we seek to solve collectively. In order for us to open successfully, we will need more than our teachers and administrators. We will need our bus drivers, custodians, food services workers, technology specialists, crossing guards, etc… all in safely and healthily. I also remind the community that the majority of our staff do not live in Falls Church City. While we observe the data in the City being relatively good today, we are also cognizant of how the virus traveled through our communities earlier this year. We all must remain vigilant to keep the curve down.

Please understand and support our collective concerns...our teachers, staff, administration, and I have genuine fear and anxiety about reopening. The risks are real. So, please be kind and be ready for things to look different than before. Instructional programming, lunch, recess, encore, collaboration in classrooms, etc...will look and feel different. Our teachers are being asked to re-vision what they have done, and this will take time, energy, and creativity. Give gracious space and know they have your child's best interest in mind, but they have fears for their own families too.

I hope you have a great weekend and continue to wear your face coverings and social distance.

Sincerely,

Peter Noonan

Sinceramente,

Peter Noonan
