Dr. Noonan's Road to Reopening Update

Happy Friday everyone. I hope you have big plans for this weekend. This is the third installment of The Road to Reopening, and you can now expect it every Friday as we close in on the start of school August 24th. This issue is focused heavily on K-5 (MDES, TJES), and next week’s edition will be more Secondary focused again. However, please take a read through as we are one system and #BetterTogether!

This week’s installment includes important and NEW information.

  • On June 26th we announced our reopening plan as a region based on an agreement with the surrounding superintendents in an effort to show solidarity as a group. Since that time we have received an immense amount of feedback from our staff and community regarding the reopening of schools. As I have said before, this process is iterative as we work to meet the needs of all of our students, faculty, staff, and families in Falls Church. We have listened, gotten creative, and have developed a revised plan that we believe will work for everyone. However, it will take EVERYONE including our families and community to make this work.

  • Thank you for completing the survey. As of this moment, we have received 2,327 responses which is a 94.3% response rate! Of those who responded, 90.2% indicated that they will return to face-to-face instruction, 7.4% selected online only, with the remaining saying they are unsure. The new information today may have an impact on how you responded to the survey. If you wish to change your preference from what you indicated on the original survey based on this new information please reach out directly to your school’s principal (Mr. Kasik and Mr. Swanson) by the end of next week so we can finalize our plans as soon as possible.

MDES and TJES

  • Will open on August 24th in an alternating day format as previously shared with Monday being a teacher work day. However, we have done an analysis of all of the available space in each of the buildings and, with creativity and flexibility, we can bring back all of our students and maintain 6’ of social distance. Therefore, we plan to do a phased reopening of the two elementary schools in an effort to bring back 100% of our students. By doing a phased process we will have the ability to work with students in smaller groups to develop procedural routines, teach appropriate social distancing and hygiene protections, engage students in the “new normal” of sitting further from others, etc… We will evaluate how it is going in the latter part of September and if all is going smoothly, we are still in Phase III of the Governor’s plan, etc...we will begin to bring back all of our students. We will not do it until we believe it is safe for our students, staff, and faculty.

  • An important note...we beg of you to understand our collective concerns...our teachers, staff, administration, and I have significant fear and anxiety about making this move to bring in more students. We recognize we are small and have more flexibility than others and we are all excited to see our students again and welcome them back. We know they need instruction from our tremendous staff but we are nervous. So, please be kind, gentle in spirit, and be ready for things to look different than the way you may know them from the past. Instructional programming, lunch, recess, encore, collaboration in classrooms, etc...will look and feel different. Our teachers are being asked to re-vision what they have done and this will take time, energy, and creativity. Give gracious space and know they have your child's best interest in mind but they hold their own families in their heads and hearts too.

  • YOU play an important role in helping mitigate our anxiety...we ask that you be prepared to honor and respect our rules about face mask wearing, continue educating your students about social distancing, be ready to participate in a daily health screening, know that we will be doing temperature checks each day when students come to school, don't send a student who is sick, etc...

  • It will take every single one of us to make this work. If you don’t believe you can support our expectations we respectfully ask that you opt for the online version of school until we return to our “new normal.” Further, because we will have an online version of school, if a student isn’t able to meet the expectations of safety we will work with them and family but if need be we will move a student to online until such time as they are able to participate in a safe way.

Information about Virtual Virginia - Elementary Version

  • Parents who choose the online learning option for elementary students will have their students enrolled in the Virtual Virginia Outreach program. Virtual Virginia Outreach provides access to content, resources, and an online learning environment.  FCCPS will be given the autonomy to use and edit the curriculum content and import digital learning resources into the Schoology platform.  All of the Virtual Virginia curriculum and learning resources are aligned to the Virginia SOL standards.  The program consists of modules and each module is broken down into four components:  introduction and objectives, content with a video attachment, application (games or interactive activity), and a hands-on assignment.

  • Virtual Virginia curriculum content is created by a select group of licensed teachers and is specifically designed to be engaging, interactive, and age-appropriate for students. These teachers will continue to build and modify the curriculum during the upcoming year and new content will be added as the year goes along.

  • FCCPS will provide an instructional staff member to oversee student progress in the Virtual Virginia system while also grading the assignments.  The programs also allow for the transfer of grades from online to face-to-face instruction if or when the student returns to their FCCPS school at the end of the first semester.

  • Students who are enrolled in Virtual Virginia Outreach will engage in a combination of synchronous and asynchronous learning. At this time we are not able to determine how much synchronous time can be provided since the schedules for student learning have not yet been created. However, our goal will be to focus on providing synchronous learning for students in the areas of language arts and mathematics.

  • Please know that we have done the same space analysis of the two secondary schools and because of their size and capacity the same option of full return is not available. However, we continue to look for creative and thoughtful ways to increase direct instruction to our secondary students and hope to provide further clarity next week.

Now that we have a cohesive and clear path to work towards the execution of the plan begins in earnest. You will continue to receive information from me on Fridays and routinely from our principals as we make our way to the start of the school year.

Sincerely,

Peter Noonan

------

Sinceramente,

Peter Noonan
